Early start this morning for a train to Uno, then a ferry to Naoshima which is a small island. We then tackled getting a bus from the ferry port to the village where our ryokan was located. We are still doing OK with transport but then there are still many English references and signage.
Naoshima has reinvented itself quite recently as an art area with quite a number of art projects and museums. We arranged to include this place on the itinerary based on a picture of this sculpture in the Rough Guide and I wasn’t expecting much else. The place is much quieter and more peaceful than the big city so it was a welcome change. The area is just next to the inland sea and when you go out that way there are views of beautiful small rocky islands covered in lush green trees. The shape of these islands looks a little like mini Hawaiian islands.
