We are leaving Tokyo today for Okayama. Before we started on this holiday Ian and I had debated for many weeks the pros and cons of a rucksack vs wheelie suitcase. Since “I am not backpacking” I couldn’t understand the need for a rucksack but I did end up with a hybrid version that is more wheelie suitcase but does have hidden straps in case we did indeed “end up with our luggage on sand” as Ian thinks?!?

Within minutes of being away Ian has realised that the back pack, it’s weight and impracticality in this heat was a bad idea (although he has yet to admit this properly) however the wonderful efficiency of the Japanese tourist industry has come to his rescue. There is a commonly used luggage forwarding system that means, for a fee, the hotels will forward your luggage on to another destination so that you don’t have to carry this yourself on trains and ferries. This is doubly useful for us as we are spending much of the coming weeks with one night in each town. The plan is that we forward on the bulk of our luggage to the accommodation tomorrow night and take light hand luggage for this evening. There are three occasions when this will be the best thing to do, it also means that we can go straight to sight seeing as soon as we arrive.
